The most common form of improving a ruby’s colour is the treatment of the gemstone with heat. The traditional art of blow pipe heating, which has been perfected for centuries, is a long standing technique employed to enhance the colour and clarity of a ruby. The other common practice, which has been developed more recently, is the heat treatment with lead glass.
