The
Paraiba Tourmaline
The Paraiba tourmaline was discovered only in the late 1980s. With its intense never-before-seen neon blue hues, this rare treasure conquered the world within only decades. Tourmalines come in all sorts of colours, but almost none stand out like the Paraiba tourmaline. The intense hue that comes in a high saturation combined with exceptional brightness distinguishes Paraiba tourmalines from all other gemstones. It is believed that for every 10,000 diamonds only one Paraiba tourmaline is discovered, making this radiant gemstone extremely rare and coveted by many gemstone enthusiasts.
The discovery of
The Paraiba Tourmaline
The first Paraiba tourmaline was discovered in the mines of São José de Batalha, Paraíba state in Brazil, by the miner Heitor Dimas Barbosa and his assistant. When this rare gemstone was first introduced to the public at the annual Tucson gem show in the early 1990s, demand for it was immediately extremely high, and, since supply was limited, its value soared. In the years since mines in Nigeria and Mozambique have discovered Paraiba tourmalines of comparable quality.
