Protection for
Your jewellery
If you handle your jewellery carefully, and clean it regularly, you will be able to derive more lasting pleasure from it. It is therefore important to protect your jewellery against impact, prevent it from coming into contact with rough surfaces of any kind as well as chemicals like perfumes, creams or lotions. To protect it from potential damage, you should remove your jewellery before exercising, showering, performing household chores or working in the garden.
The best place to store your jewellery is in its original Gübelin Jewellery case, or alternatively, we recommend a jewellery case with individual compartments. Scratches can be avoided if you wrap each piece in a soft cloth.
Maintain
coloured gemstones
Precious stones have an exceptional beauty, rarity and longevity. But hard as they are, they still require particular attention and care. Keep your gemstones safe from knocks and impacts of any kind, this is especially important for emeralds, which are much more delicate than most other gemstones. With the exception of emeralds, precious stones can be cleaned from time to time in tepid, soapy (pH-neutral) water. Dirt can be carefully removed with a very soft toothbrush. After cleaning, rinse the gemstone well under running water, and dry it gently with a soft cloth.
Make your
diamonds dazzle
Diamonds should be cleaned once a month. Carefully place your diamond jewellery in tepid water with a mild, pH-neutral soap and clean with a soft toothbrush. Then rinse your diamonds under running water and dry them with a soft cloth. To maintain their shine, you should polish your diamond jewellery regularly with a soft cloth. We recommend our Gübelin care cloth for this purpose.
Care for
pearls
The relatively soft, shimmering surface of a pearl calls for especially attentive care. Keep your pearls separate from your other jewellery, to avoid possible damage. Pearls are best kept in a soft cloth. You can protect your pearls and maintain their lustre longer by following these simple guidelines. Cosmetics, perfumes, hair sprays and deodorants are corrosive to pearls and detract from their shine and beauty. So you should always put on your pearls after you have finished doing the rest of your hair and makeup, and later make sure that they are always the first thing you remove. After they have been worn, clean your pearls with a soft cloth to remove any traces of cosmetics or perspiration. We also recommend that you clean your pearls occasionally in-between times, with a soft, dampened cloth. Pearls need a certain degree of moisture to prevent them from drying out and becoming brittle. This should be borne in mind when keeping pearls in a safe. You should have your pearls expertly cleaned by a specialist once a year, at which point the silk thread and clasps of bracelets and necklaces should also be checked. The pearls can be rethreaded and re-secured, if necessary.
Cleaning
gold & platinum
Gold and platinum are soft metals and can be easily scratched. To help avoid this, store each piece of jewellery separately. Most gold and platinum jewellery can be cleaned at home with mildly soapy water and a toothbrush. However, you should have your jewellery looked after and polished by an expert from time to time.
